The Debate Every Pool Buyer Has

Walk into any pool showroom in the Tampa Bay area and the question comes up almost immediately: saltwater or chlorine? It's one of the most misunderstood topics in the pool industry. Let's clear it up.

What Is a Saltwater Pool, Actually?

A saltwater pool still uses chlorine — it just generates chlorine on-site using a salt chlorine generator (SWG). You add salt (sodium chloride) to the pool water, and the generator converts it to chlorine via electrolysis. The chlorine sanitizes the pool, then reverts back to salt. Saltwater pools are not chlorine-free. They're chlorine pools with a different delivery mechanism. The chlorine level is lower and more consistent — which is where the softer feel comes from.

Real Benefits of Saltwater

  • Softer water: Lower, consistent chlorine levels mean less skin and eye irritation — a real benefit for daily swimmers and families
  • Less chemical handling: No hauling chlorine tablets or liquid. The generator does the work automatically.
  • More consistent sanitization: Steady chlorine levels rather than peaks and valleys of manual dosing
  • Lower ongoing chemical costs: Salt is inexpensive

Trade-offs of Saltwater

  • Higher upfront cost: A quality salt chlorine generator adds $1,500–$3,500. Cells need replacing every 3–7 years at $400–$800 each.
  • Salt is corrosive: Over time, salt can damage metal fixtures, stone coping, and deck materials. Especially relevant in Apollo Beach and coastal areas.
  • Not zero maintenance: You still need to test and balance pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer.
  • Cell requires cleaning: Calcium deposits need cleaning every 3–6 months in Florida's hard water.

Traditional Chlorine: Still a Great Choice

Traditional chlorine pools have a lower upfront cost, simpler equipment, and are slightly more tolerant of neglect in the short term. For homeowners who prefer manual control or have budget reasons to keep things simpler, traditional chlorine is a valid choice.

What Do We Recommend?

  • If you swim daily or have kids → saltwater (the comfort difference is real)
  • If you entertain occasionally and prefer simplicity → either works well
  • If you're in a waterfront or coastal property → discuss corrosion trade-offs carefully
  • If you have a tighter budget → traditional chlorine lowers initial cost
