Pool Maintenance in Florida: Year-Round Tips from a South Shore Pool Pro — South Shore Pools & Luxury Outdoors Apollo Beach FL

Why Florida Pool Maintenance Is Different

Florida's climate — year-round warmth, intense UV, heavy summer rainfall, and high humidity — creates specific challenges that require a year-round, Florida-specific approach. After 15+ years servicing pools in Apollo Beach, Ruskin, Sun City Center, and Riverview, here's what every Florida pool owner needs to know.

1. Test Your Water Twice a Week

Florida's heat accelerates chemical consumption dramatically. A pool that's perfectly balanced on Monday can be out of range by Thursday in summer. Test chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer at least twice per week during summer.

Ideal ranges for Florida pools:

  • Free chlorine: 2.0–4.0 ppm
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer): 30–50 ppm for outdoor pools
  • Calcium hardness: 200–400 ppm

2. Run Your Pump Longer Than You Think

We recommend running your variable-speed pump for at least 8 hours per day in summer — and 6 hours minimum in cooler months. Modern variable-speed pumps are so efficient that running them longer barely impacts your electric bill.

3. Brush the Pool Walls Weekly

Brushing breaks up algae before it can establish itself. Run a nylon brush along the walls, floor, and steps every week — especially in the corners and around fittings.

4. Manage Your Cyanuric Acid Carefully

Cyanuric acid (CYA) protects your chlorine from UV — essential in Florida. But too much (above 80–100 ppm) creates chlorine lock, where your chlorine becomes ineffective. If you're using stabilized chlorine tablets (trichlor), you're adding CYA with every treatment. Monitor your levels and switch to unstabilized chlorine when needed.

5. Prepare for Summer Rains

Florida's rainy season (June–September) dilutes chemicals and introduces contaminants. After every significant rain: test and rebalance your water, check your water level, and shock the pool.

6. Watch for Algae

Green algae can turn a clear pool green in 24–48 hours in warm weather. Prevention: maintain proper chlorine levels, keep pump run times adequate, brush weekly, and use a quality algaecide preventatively.

7. Service Your Equipment Annually

Schedule annual service for filter cleaning, pump seal and impeller inspection, heater scale inspection, automation system calibration, and inspection of all plumbing connections.
