Florida is the Perfect State for Outdoor Kitchens
With 260+ days of sunshine per year, the South Shore Tampa Bay area is truly outdoor living territory. An outdoor kitchen transforms your backyard from a place you walk through to a destination. At South Shore Pools & Luxury Outdoors, we design and build outdoor kitchens alongside custom pools all across Apollo Beach, Ruskin, Sun City Center, Riverview, and Brandon.
1. Choose Materials Built for the Florida Climate
Florida's combination of UV exposure, humidity, salt air (especially in Apollo Beach and coastal areas), and heavy rainfall is unforgiving on materials that weren't designed for it.
- Countertops: Porcelain tile, granite, or concrete. Avoid natural stone that isn't sealed.
- Cabinet frames: Marine-grade stainless steel or aluminum. Avoid wood.
- Finish surfaces: Stucco, concrete board, or porcelain tile.
- Appliances: 304 or 316 stainless steel only. Look for appliances rated for outdoor/marine use.
2. Plan Your Layout Around Your Lifestyle
Common configurations include the straight/linear kitchen (works in tighter spaces), the L-shape (adds counter space and separates prep from cooking zones), and the U-shape (best for entertaining). Before choosing, consider: how many people you entertain, whether you want bar or dining seating, and proximity to the pool.
3. Essential Appliances
- Built-in grill: At least 36" wide with a side burner
- Outdoor refrigerator: Undercounter, stainless, rated for high ambient temps
- Sink with hot/cold water: Requires early plumbing planning
- Storage drawers: Stainless steel, self-closing
- Ice maker or cooler drawer: Great for entertaining
4. Shade & Shelter: Non-Negotiable in Florida
A beautiful outdoor kitchen with no shade is one you won't use from May through September. Options include pergola with canopy, screen enclosure, attached covered lanai, or freestanding tiki hut. Ceiling fans and misting systems extend comfort dramatically.
5. Lighting: Set the Mood
Outdoor kitchens get used most in the evening. Include: task lighting under overhead cabinets, string lights or pendants over bar seating, and landscape/pool lighting that frames the overall space. Tying it all to your smart pool automation system is a premium touch.
What Does an Outdoor Kitchen Cost in South Shore FL?
- Basic outdoor kitchen: $15,000–$25,000
- Mid-range with appliances + pergola: $30,000–$55,000
- Luxury outdoor living room: $60,000–$120,000+
Most of our clients build their outdoor kitchen as part of a new pool project, allowing us to coordinate the design as a unified whole. Request a design consultation or see our remodels and upgrades page.
